The Shift to Linux

Bacchus has always invested time and resources into studying emerging technologies and consequently has been able to respond quickly to the changing needs of our clients. Even though Linux had been around since the early 1990's it did not become a viable option for our clients until a few years ago as an alternative to traditional operating systems. Our systems administrator, having vast knowledge and experience on managing most systems platforms, had been rigorously testing the Linux system since the late 90's which meant we were able to provide sound technical advice to our clients when they needed it most.

In 2002, Collins Foods Group made the decision to look for the 'next generation' platform for their DB2. They attempted to convert the application to a Windows 2000 server but found the performance unsatisfactory. Bacchus suggested that Linux would give them improved performance and increased flexibility. To prove this, Bacchus decided to build a Linux server identical in specification to the Windows 2000 server. The difference in database access and data loading was measured up to 4 times quicker on the identical Linux platform!

Collins Foods Group made the move to a Linux operating system in September 2002 and haven't looked back. The system has allowed them to reduce operating costs by giving greater control over pricing and processing invoices electronically, saving them up to $1 million in operating costs over the life of the product, according to the IT Director. In addition, the new Linux based system gives Collins Food far greater accuracy over their costs and speed of access than before, saving several days in processing time.

As a part of a recent nomination for a Linux award, the IT Director of Collins Foods Group had this to say about Bacchus:

".The TIMS system has enabled Collins Foods to become a leader in the use of 'internet based' technology and has allowed us to achieve greater and greater efficiencies as more vendors are added to the system.

Specifically, the move to the Linux Operating system has allowed us to combine 3 pieces of hardware into one machine. It has improved the processing times of our payroll down from 2 days to one. It has also given us far greater control over the receipt and retrieval of information. The additional speed and flexibility in the operating system has allowed us to tighten the controls in our Recipe Costing system to again reduce processing time.."
